After grandpa’s major baseball accident, he decided he wanted to go to Harvard Business School because now that he couldn’t remember very well, he could no longer be an engineer. Grandpa didn’t say anything else about Harvard Business school other than: “[Going] was a huge mistake, it was the reason your grandmother and I divorced.” She really didn’t want him to go, she didn’t see the point, he was working at Honeywell making plenty of money and they already had four kids, how were they to pay for his going back to school to learn something he didn’t need to learn? The whole situation was one that I would not have wanted to be in, and I can only imagine what kind of stresses it must have put on the family. My own mother was six when this was all going on, so she doesn’t remember a lot of it, if any of it. However, despite all the trouble that going back to school got my grandfather into, it wasn’t all bad, he still got to work with engineering, even if it wasn’t specifically designing the products anymore.
